The brightness reality check

This is the big one. Compact projectors are dimmer than their full-size cousins. Physics does not negotiate. In a dark room at 80 to 100 inches, they look great. With lamps on or daylight leaking in, the image washes out fast. If your room has ambient light you cannot control, a brighter traditional projector is the better call.

What to check before buying

• Lumens, honestly assessed: compare ANSI lumens, not marketing numbers, and assume you will watch in the dark.
• Battery vs. plug-in: battery models trade brightness and runtime for freedom. Fine for a movie, not for all-day use.
• Throw distance: compacts are usually standard throw; make sure your room fits the screen size you want (check here).
• App support: verify the streaming apps you actually use are available and up to date on the built-in platform.
